Home/Work
“Home/Work” responds to the requisite collapsing of delineated domestic and work spaces in corporate offices. The unidentifiable suited figure central to this image is an avatar for the worker, for the self. Here he is implicated, just as we are, reflected in the glass framed photograph in which we view. The artwork presents a cycle of mediation: the claustrophobic office space; the worker demarcated from the space, but still present through the work of reflection; the viewer, implicit in this cycle, viewing the augmented self and its ties to production, creating an infinity mirror of capitalism. While this may feel dehumanizing, the work reminds us that we need only see ourselves in the reflection to be reminded that control can be taken in the face of drudgery, that there is an underlying power to corporate anonymity and an enforced work/life boundary.
